Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are crucial in the process of Oxygen transfer, cell metabolism, body temperature regulation, energy production, nerve and tissue insulation, and generally play an important role in the overall health of dogs and cats. Unfortunately most animals are not getting the required EFA's from their food, and many supplements are incorrectly balanced. In order to do their jobs properly, EFA's are needed in unadulterated (undamaged) form, and in the correct ratio. Studies have shown that supplementing with only Omega 3 EFA''s and its derivatives (as found in fish oils) alone are not very effective, and can even be harmful. Unfortunately the idea that fish oil is the best source of EFA has been popularized without the scientific research to back it up. It is generally believed that enough Omega 6 EFA's are taken in through a pet's normal diet, however this is not the case. Most of the Omega 6 EFA's in pet foods are damaged from cooking and processing and need to be replaced with whole undamaged Omega 6 EFA's. Adulterated (damaged) EFA's lose their ability to effectively oxygenate the body and thus can actually cause damage to cells, tissues and organs.
