HOW MUCH FAT-TER CAN YOU MAKE YOUR HARD DRIVE?
Want to know how much hard disk space you could regain if you switched to Windows 98 and
converted to the FAT32 file system? (In case you haven't heard the scoop on FAT32, it stores
files on your hard disk in smaller clusters than the older FAT16 file system, resulting in less wasted
space.) Download the FAT32 utility and find out. When the download is complete, extract the
contents of Fat32.exe to your location of choice, then double-click the resulting Fat32win.exe file
to run the utility. Once inside, just select a drive and click Scan.

There is something sexy about geek-talk. And that's what you get in this discussion mailing list dedicated to the fine science and art of building an Intel-based PC. Founded by Mark L. Chambers, a.k.a. "The Chief" and author of Building a PC for Dummies, his Screwdrivers list is for experts and novices alike who want do it themselves. In other words, "There are no dumb questions." Postings often concern things like how to find products, what's the cheapest price, or how to get your PC to do something specific, such as create an automatic system shutdown. Although, it's all about creating modern computers, subscribers relish in talking about aspects of older ones like the Commodore 64. How about the TRS 80, otherwise known as "Trash 80"? I can absolutely see the Jolt Cola cans littered about the place. To subscribe, send an e-mail to mailto:pclist@usa.net and type subscribe in the subject line.

Internet Traffic Report
Contemplating downloading the latest version of Netscape Communicator? Before you attempt to tow that 18-ton semi down the information superhighway, you'd better check the traffic. The Internet Traffic Report is a helpful tool for gauging how quickly data traffic is moving on the Internet in general, or in your area in particular. The graphically represented, easy-to-understand results can let you know if the file from San Jose will speed along the wires at a reasonable speed, or if thousands of folks are currently online downloading that silly Ally McBeal dancing baby.
CAPITAL OF NASTY ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE Crackling with sarcasm and witty observations on everyday life, the Capital of Nasty or CoN for short, provides bad boys, Leandrosnaghi-Nicastro and Colin Barrett, with more than enough space to say anything they damn well please. Office buildings have wheelchair ramps, TV has closed captions, but many websites are inaccessible to people with disabilities. It doesn't have to be that way.
If you would like an instant lesson in how inaccessible the Web remains for some, download and install the free trial version of IBM's Home Page Reader, a talking browser (http://www.ibm.com/able/hprtrial25.htm). Use it to get a sense of what it's like to hear the Web rather than see it, and to understand more clearly why many sites flunk the accessibility test.
Visit your own business or personal page with Home Page Reader. Now you can understand. The Web is full of accessibility resources. Here's where to start if you're responsible for a site, or just want ammunition to nudge those in charge of your company's online presence in the right direction:
Try starting at Bobby the accessibility checker at the Center for Applied Special Technology (http://www.cast.org/bobby). Enter your site's URL, and Bobby will give you a good idea of what you need to do to make the pages usable by a screen reader -- the most helpful tool for visually impaired Web surfers.
Another place to visit to make your site more accessible, is the World Wide Web Consortium's Quick Tips to Make Accessible Web Sites (http://www.w3.org/wai/references/quicktips). Or try W3C's Web Accessibility Guidelines (http://www.w3.org/tr/wai-webcontent). You can also download the free utility HTML Tidy (http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy), which is a useful supplement to the checks performed by Bobby.
A bastion of support, information, and reality checks, the HTML Writers Guild's AWARE Center (http://www.awarecenter.org) offers straight-forward Web page coding tutorials and thought-provoking essays, including one on the myths about creating accessible sites (http://www.awarecenter.org/why/myths.html). Myth no. 1: An accessible Web page is dull, boring, plain text.
