DESCRIPTION
Ellagic acid is a compound found in raspberries, strawberries,
cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates, and other plant foods.
OVERVIEW
Research in animal and laboratory models has found
that ellagic acid inhibits the growth of tumors
caused by certain carcinogens. Studies in humans are underway to determine the
effect
of long-term daily consumption of raspberries on cell activity in the human
colon.
Clinical tests conducted at the Hollings Cancer Institute at the Medical University
of South Carolina
(MUSC) show that ellagic acid, a naturally occurring plant phenol may be the
most potent way to
prevent cancer, inhibit the growth of cancer cells, and arrest the growth of
cancer in subjects with
a genetic predisposition for the disease.*
Dr. Daniel Nixon, MUSC, began studying ellagic acid in 1993. His recently published results show:
Results were achieved with laboratory animals given ellagic
acid from natural sources and also synthetic
ellagic acid. Hollings Cancer Institute and Dr. Daniel Nixon are not affiliated
with Optimal Health Concepts
or any other company. They have not tested any commercial product containing
ellagic acid and they are
not affiliated with any manufacturer of ellagic acid products.
Additional studies suggest that one of the mechanisms by which
ellagic acid inhibits mutagenesis and
carcinogenesis is by forming adducts with DNA, thus masking binding sites to
be occupied by the mutagen
or carcinogen.
A new publication called the "American Cancer Society's
Guide to Complementary and Alternative Cancer
Methods" has documented that ellagic Acid is a very promising natural supplement,
because it causes
apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells in the lab tests, with no change to normal
healthy cells.
